Mortgage - $1032 per month as DH jacked it $200 a while ago plus $153 in strata fees. :(

We rent a two bedroom apartment. It has a pretty big patio, gas fireplace, washer/dryer, dishwasher and two full bathrooms! We pay $900/month, plus our own utilities, minus the gas.

We have an 1800 sq ft 2 floor fixer-upper house. It has 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a large rec room for the kids downstairs (used to be a 3 bedroom w/1 bedroom suite).
We pay a mortgage, bi-weekly about $590. So it adds up to about $1180/mo.
But this month, because there are 3 paydays, we pay $1770. I don't mind it... pays the mortgage down quicker. :)

Right now we are in a 2 bedroom apartment and pay $751. BUT we are moving this month to a 4 bedroom duplex for $1300. Housing in Kamloops is ridiculous and incredibly hard to find.

we owned for awhile in Chilliwack, then sold and moved back to the city... we found a sweet deal on a 2800 sq. ft house in Burnaby, with a delightful landlord who let us convert half of the basement to a suite, so we pay 1100 for three bedrooms up, plus one down and a rec room, and the biggest yard we've ever had! We also pulled up the super tacky 70's carpet and found pristine hardwood floors... lucky us!

How can they raise it so much??? That doesn't sound legal to me.

This is straight from the Residential Tenancy Act...

"Allowable Rent Increases for 2008

September 4, 2007

The allowable rent increases for 2008 for conventional residential tenancies and manufactured home park tenancies are as follows:

* For a conventional residential tenancy rent increase that takes effect in 2008, the allowable increase is 3.7 per cent.
* For a manufactured home park tenancy rent increase that takes effect in 2008, the allowable increase is 3.7 per cent plus a proportional amount. For a definition of the proportional amount and for more information please see the Rent Increase Formula for Manufactured Home Parks fact sheet.

The annual allowable rent increase for conventional residential tenancies is determined by the formula in the Residential Tenancy Regulation.

The annual allowable rent increase for manufactured home park tenancies is determined by the formula in the Manufactured Home Park Tenancy Regulation.

Residential Tenancy Branch forms required for rent increases are available at http://www.rto.gov.bc.ca/content/formsFees/default.aspx.

Tenants aged 60 and over may be eligible for rent subsidies under the BC Housing SAFER program. Low-income families may be eligible for rent subsidies through the Rental Assistance Program. Further information is available from BC Housing at 1-800-257-7756 or www.bchousing.org."

Hi... just to let you know, in BC, the landlord must provide three FULL months written notice, and the increase can not be more than the inflation rate, plus two percent. As long as the landlord is within these boundaries, not a whole lot you can do... but if they are outside of them, let them know (landlords often don't know their rights and obligations)
the inflation rate is roughly two, two and a half percent... plus the two percent allowable increase, let's even say five percent total... that is roughly 45 bucks per month that they can raise your rent... you may want to check it out, if you are wanting to stay!

Unless you have signed something allowing this rent increase to take effect, the highest your rent can legally be raised to is $881.45.

I just hate to see the 'big guys' take advantage of us 'little guys', kwim?

I know that, we got a good deal on the place during the time of construction. We also signed a six months lease. It was my husband's aunt who was helping to rent it for a friend and she really pushed for it to not increase in a large sum.... she failed miserably.

We pay $2,1800 to rent a four-bedroom house out near UBC, and the rent is going up to $2,260 in February. I've looked around, and for this area, that's pretty decent. We also rent two rooms downstairs to a couple of students (our infamous 'basement boys') at $500+ each - otherwise we'd never be able to swing that much in rent! I guess that is what we get choosing to live in this neck of the woods. Our house is really old, and shows it's age, but it's comfortable, I keep it clean, and it's in a great neighbourhood. I'd love more space, though. And no basement boys

I'm right in the ghetto of whalley, and my house has tons of issues.. My carpet is thin, indoor/outdoor crap! But, like Trish, I keep it neat and tidy (with help from dh) and its home for now... Its a two bedroom/1 bath in a 3plex and we pay $700

That's not bad either though. My MIL had that thin carpet too - it was hard on the boys clothes knees...lol. But a home is what you make it, right? :)

we are renting a townhome as we try to buy farm land, we hav a big bid under subjects right now. We were warned how expensive BC is compared to ATL but I was not ready for the rent here; our 2 bedroom place is 1400 a month. Although farm land is over a million here for good land. I hope we get this the house on it is older 44 years but lovely none the same. keep your fingers crossed for me

Yes, it can be quite expensive on the lower mainland. It is expensive in Victoria too, which is why we live in the Cowichan Valley, an hour from Victoria. It is much more affordable here.

We lived in Alberta for awhile so I know that it IS quite a bit cheaper there... BC is expensive, no matter where you look, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you to get the land you have your hearts set on :)

BC is crazy expensive.

My younger sister and two of her friends are renting a crappy little 3 bdrm basement suite in Kamloops for $1200/month. It's a weird little place too, one of the bedrooms has a counter with a kitchen sink in it, and the other has a door leading outside.

We rent a 1700sqft 3bdrm townhouse in Langley for $1250 a mo. It was the cheapest place we could find that was big enough for 6 of us.

That's actually pretty darn good for the area and size. Still a lot of money to put out each month but I'm sure you know what I mean.
